To hell with looks, it’s what’s inside that counts!
APPEARANCE:
Zidane’s a bit of a scrawny fellow whose wardrobe does nothing to make him look meatier. His hair is dirty blond, haphazardly cut with chaotic layers and bangs that fall about his face in a way that’s carelessly stylish, and the few longest strands are tied back to keep them out of the way. His face is impish, a bit like a pixie’s--a state that’s only emphasized by his twinkling green-blue eyes and playful smirk. He looks younger than he really is by far, mostly because his hair is very thick and his gloves and boots make his hands and feet look larger. His clothes are somewhat mismatched, with belts dangling alongside frillier details, and the most noticeable aspect of him is his tail. It’s so long he has to curl it a bit to keep it from touching the floor, but it’s prehensile and can support his entire weight.
PERSONALITY:
Zidane is a perverted thief with an absolutely solid moral center. While he doesn’t think twice about swiping someone’s belongings or kidnapping a princess, he isn’t really out to do lasting harm and mainly does what he has to to get by--or a little more than that, as he's fiercely loyal to his friends and will bend over backwards for them in a second. Even so, he has an eye for the big picture and can be persuaded out of emotionally charged lunacy with logic--or into despair with the dark side of the truth. Nonetheless, Zidane has a knack for finding the bright side of it soon enough. He has an odd combination of innocence and experience at his disposal, as he’ll frequently do things for noble reasons but has enough grief in his background to understand what is and isn’t important, so his actions are genuine and not for personal gain (unless a girl is involved). The biggest way Dagger has changed him there is giving that girl a single identity, as Zidane has always played around before and will always be a little flirtatious, but he has his own sense of what is and isn't going too far. In Dagger's case, he isn't actively looking to hurt her, and will especially curtail his bad habits when she's around.
Zidane has a natural affinity for leadership but isn't really aware of it, as he has an easy time getting people to follow him but works completely off necessity. The unspoken implication in most cases is that they're speeding up the process, as Zidane is stubborn and (in some cases) stupid enough to press determinedly on with or without help. This isn't to say he won't ask for it--Zidane can be just as determined about tracking down comrades-in-arms as he is about the issue at hand. It's because he's normally surrounded by people (Tantalus, the FFIX traveling party, etc.) that he stays alive and he knows it, as Zidane's destiny tends to drag him to dangerous places. He's also aware of that and is certain to warn his companions when the going gets rough, but the fixation on sticking together has been the mortar of his group in the past and he can relate directly to the meaning behind the words "I have to do this."
BIOGRAPHY: [Copied from Mistless and I Felt Heartless and just about everywhere I've had him.]
Zidane is a Genome created by Garland as an Angel of Death after the planet Terra was destroyed. He wasn’t exactly meant to be an individual, since his body would become the vessel for a sleeping Terran soul, but his temporary predecessor, Kuja, dropped him off on the planet Gaia and left him to die. Zidane didn’t, and was taken in by Baku, the leader of a thief clan called Tantalus. Throughout his life he seemed to fit in effortlessly, but there was something a little broken about his past. All he could remember was a blue light.
Eventually, his path led him to Alexandria, where Tantalus planned to kidnap Princess Garnet and take her to Lindblum. Little did Zidane know, this was a special commission by Regent Cid of Lindblum in order to get his niece away from the disturbingly erratic Queen Brahne. The plan went off without a hitch, even if the princess caused a bit of a stir incognito and gave Zidane and Blank both a dizzying chase, up until Garnet’s bodyguard, Steiner, tracked them down. Despite being dissuaded with oglops, he followed them up onstage and was duped into believing the acting was real. Then a stranger in the crowd, a young black mage named Vivi, ran onstage to escape the guards trying to throw him out. In executing a fire spell he set Garnet’s hood on fire and she was forced to reveal her identity. This enraged Queen Brahne to the point of attacking the ship, which, while it sailed free of the city, crash-landed in the Evil Forest. Most of Tantalus was badly wounded, but Zidane had fallen off the ship and escaped unharmed. He discovered that the princess, Vivi, and Steiner were all missing, and tracked them down deeper into the forest. A strange creature took Garnet and then Vivi hostage, and Zidane discovered the power of Trance. Vivi escaped, but Garnet was kidnapped again by wildlife and Steiner and Vivi were exposed to deadly spores. Zidane brought them both back to the ship, where they were attended to by the clan, and talked to Baku about Garnet. Baku refused to let Zidane go after her, but Zidane quit Tantalus to do so and after a brawl with Baku took Steiner and Vivi out into the forest again to rescue Garnet. They did so, but in the process managed to petrify the forest and only barely escaped. Blank was petrified in Zidane’s stead, but the rest of Tantalus were able to escape.
In the meantime, the group of Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, and Steiner proceeded through the Ice Cavern in an attempt to get to Lindblum. Garnet, Vivi, and Steiner all fell asleep due to a spell cast by a Black Waltz, a being similar to a black mage, and Zidane fought it to free them. Then they proceeded on to Dali, where Garnet took on the alias of Dagger and they discovered the village was providing black mages to Alexandria for a reason unknown to them at the moment. Vivi was kidnapped and brought in as part of the shipment, but Zidane and Garnet rescued him and escaped onto the airship with Steiner after battling another Black Waltz. On the way, they were attacked by a third Waltz and all of the black mages on the airship were killed. Vivi, who had bonded with them in spite of the fact that they mostly didn’t talk, took this personally and tried to deal with the Waltz himself. They only barely escaped, with the Waltz’s ship exploding behind them, and made it to Lindblum, where Regent Cid was revealed to be an oglop. He explained his plan to them, and Zidane met up with an old friend Freya Crescent. The two of them joined the Festival of the Hunt, Zidane because he suckered Dagger into agreeing to go on a date with him if he won. They heard that Queen Brahne has attacked Burmecia and Zidane, Vivi, and Freya all resolved to go there and find out what’s happened. Dagger decided to leave with Steiner for Alexandria to find out what’s happening, but Zidane disapproved. However, Dagger tricked him into eating sleeping weed and escaped. Despite this, Zidane and the others went to Gizmaluke Grotto and moved on through to Burmecia, where they were defeated by General Beatrix. They moved on to Cleyra, where Vivi was generally misunderstood and told Zidane about his youth with his grandfather and his questions about his existence. But then Cleyra got attacked, too, and the party had to face Beatrix.
And then Brahne attacked Cleyra with Bahamut.
Back at Alexandria, Steiner and Blank were captured and Dagger was taken to the dungeons to have her eidolons extracted. However, Zidane rushed to rescue her and came face to face with Kuja for the first time since Burmecia. Everyone escaped back to Lindblum, which Brahne attacked with Dagger’s eidolons, where Regent Cid informed them that Kuja was the one dealing the black mages to Brahne. After picking up a new party member, Quina, they headed through to the Outer Continent and encountered a place called Conde Petie, where they had to undergo a marriage ceremony in order to pass through. Once they did, they encountered a young summoner named Eiko who fell hard for Zidane. Dagger started to remember bits and pieces of her past. They discovered a tribe of black mages in the forest, all of whom spoke and were aware of themselves. Then they reached the Iifa Tree, where Kuja had been using Mist to create the black mages. Defeating the tree somehow stopped this and they returned to Madain Sari, where Eiko lived, only to discover that Amarant and another bounty hunter were both after Dagger on Brahne’s account. Zidane defeated Amarant and he joined them because Zidane didn’t kill him.
Anyway, they found out that Brahne was going to attack Kuja with Bahamut. Kuja didn’t think so, really, and attacked Brahne with Bahamut. Dagger witnessed the death of her mother and as a result stopped speaking. But then she and the others returned to Alexandria, where she was crowned Queen. Zidane got depressed because if he thought a princess was out of his league, he was pretty much screwed as far as a queen was concerned. But everyone was picking up the pieces, and everything was dandy in general.
And then Kuja attacked Alexandria with Bahamut.
Dagger and Eiko both leapt to the city’s defense by summoning Alexander, the ancient defender and namesake of Alexandria. Alexander dealt with Bahamut, and Kuja decided he needed a new toy, but then Garland crashed the party and pwnt Alexander. Zidane was able to rescue Dagger, and they went back to Lindblum where Regent Cid had moved up in the world to become a frog instead of an oglop. With his airship, they set out in search of Kuja’s desert palace. Unfortunately they epic failed and were captured. Kuja wanted Zidane to get the Gulug Stone, and gave him the choice of three companions to take with him. But it was all a façade to capture Eiko, and her pet Mog had to shield her from having her eidolons taken, turning out to be the eidolon Madeen herself. Kuja got distracted by the pretty shiny Trance and the others rescue Eiko and find Hilda, Regent Cid’s beloved wife, who had turned him into the oglop and frog in the first place. She turned him into a human again and he created an airship that doesn’t need Mist to fly.
Zidane, Dagger, Vivi, Steiner, Freya, Eiko, and Amarant all went to Terra through a dimensional warphole. This was the home of Kuja and, Zidane realizes, himself. For the first time he discovered others that looked just like him, as Genomes were meant to look the same, and met a girl named Mikoto who was genetically his sister. Kuja, he discovered, was basically his brother as well, and Garland created them all. Zidane faced Garland, who revealed to him everything about Terra and the soulless Genomes forwarding the plan to eliminate all life on Gaia to make room for the dormant Terrans, which prompted an existential crisis of epic proportions. Zidane shrugged it off, though, and joined his friends in working against Garland. Before they had the chance to actually do that, Kuja turned pretty and shiny and feathery and destroyed Garland. Garland told him anyway that Zidane was his replacement and he was going to die. Kuja lost his mind and blew up Terra, destroying it. In the meantime, Zidane and the others evacuate the rest of the Genomes. While those guys holed up in Black Mage Village, Zidane and the others headed to the Iifa Tree to sort out this Mist problem again. Because if you hit a tree enough times it stops producing fog.
Things didn’t exactly go as planned, per se, and Garland transported them right to Kuja in a mysterious place called Memoria. They defeated Kuja so he pouted and destroyed the Crystal, which was supposed to sustain all life. So Necron dropped in to see what the hell was going on and Zidane and company practically defeated death. Kuja used his remaining power to teleport them out of the Iifa Tree and to safety, but Zidane had never cooperated with Kuja and wasn’t about to start, so he insisted on going back for the Genome who was his brother as well as the Zidane that could have been. He was able to find Kuja, but Kuja definitely seemed to be dying now and the Iifa Tree didn’t exactly help when it attacked them with vines.
Against all odds, Zidane was able to escape and showed up at Alexandria years later, slipping in as Marcus in the play I Want To Be Your Canary just to be dramatic. He’s reunited with Dagger, Beatrix and Steiner get together, Freya and Ferdinand get together, Eiko and Amarant dropped by to visit in the right place at the right time, and everyone lived happily ever after.
If Zidane died after that, he doesn't remember it. The only thing on his mind since he got here has been Gaia and getting back home, so the Sanctuary seemed like the most likely source of information. It meant some paperwork, yeah, but since he was behind on his info anyway Zidane made most of it up and that much wouldn't come back to haunt him. It might take some white lies and quick fingers and he'll be sorry later, but as long as it gets him home.
Whoever pulled this off had to be highly skilled, like me.
SKILL(S):
From growing up in a boy's club where even the girls pack a punch, Zidane's used to playing rough and even more used to outright combat. His style is fluid and can adjust to a variety of opponents. The same is true for his ability to steal--not quite a habit, yet, but just as deeply ingrained--and his luck with the ladies, though that game can get unpredictable and Zidane is less capable with shrewder girls.
POWER(S):
Trance - During times of intense emotional stress, Zidane is able to tap into his strongest form, and with the furry magenta comes increased speed and dexterity. This form only lasts a short time and can weaken him to the point of exhaustion if he overdoes it.
Shift Break - Only available through Trance, this attack is long range, causing a cage of lightning to knock the enemy back into a damaging spray of water.
Free Energy - Trance-only; Zidane strikes in a quick and dirty blast of energy that strikes anyone immediately in front of him with enough force to send them flying.
Meo Twister - While in Trance, Zidane can interrupt a series of attacks with this one, throwing both daggers out at his enemy and trapping his foe between them with scorching white energy.
Grand Lethal - Possibly the most destructive ability in Zidane’s arsenal, Lethal launches him in a spinning attack bolstered by shining magenta energy in a direct and powerful strike.
WEAPON(S):
Orichalcum most frequently paired with his Mage Masher, and the less wieldy but more powerful swallow-shaped Angel Bless.
Dagger is more important to me than anything else.
CHARACTER THEME SONG(S):
Tidal – Imogen Heap
Duet – Rachael Yamagata (Ray Lamontagne)
Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE:
Ugh, sand. Zidane didn't have a ton of love for water, either, but at least being drenched meant being cool and he wouldn't be thrashing his tail every now and again to force out a spray of desert. If he could find a way out of it, he would, but it seemed to cover this whole world; and after a crash landing--the ship may look like a chocobo but it was not one--his options were limited.
That was frustrating enough, knowing Dagger and Vivi and the rest were trapped back on a darkened Gaia that he never should've left. With all these different worlds and some of the alien technologies he'd already run into, it seemed hard to imagine that there wasn't a way to fix Gaia if he could just find the right people--or the wrong ones, and beat the crap out of them. But it was starting to feel like the answer wasn't out here.
Just in case the place hadn't yet reminded him enough of the desert he and the others slogged through to get to Kuja, he stumbled across the rocky pit that contained the biggest cat head he'd ever seen in his life. It was clearly made out of stone--or sand--or something, but the way its eyes glowed made it look so alive that Zidane hung back for a long moment, one hand on his dagger hilt. Once he was relatively certain it wasn't going to attack--and that if it did he'd be ready for it--he got closer, peering around the back of it and scratching perplexedly at whatever it was made out of. Going straight in through the thing's mouth wasn't something he intended to start with; generally one avoided huge, gaping mouths when they came from Gaia where those were a little too plentiful for comfort. But the fact that this thing was carved, or looked like it, didn't escape Zidane--and when he spotted the stairs at the back of its throat that pretty much decided that. He still hesitated, clambering up onto the thing's lower lip and seizing hold of the upper to keep his balance--or keep the entire mouth from closing on him, as the case may be--and squinted down into the darkness, tail twitching almost nervously behind him.
Something glinted.
Hey, what's that...? All thought of home was not forgotten, but Zidane's curiosity didn't leave room for much else. Clearly this was an ancient cave of some sort, man-made or magic-borne, and maybe there was an old altar or mysterious artifactor fabulous forgotten treasuresdown there--it didn't really matter, with this kind of unforgiving entrance it had to be something interesting. But Zidane still had to be on his guard; desert beasts and Heartless aside, if someone went to the trouble to disguise the cave's opening like this they may be just as willing to protect it.
So, with an eye toward the glint and his ears pricked for pursuers, Zidane was inside with a hop, skip, and a jump, and his boots thudded solidly down the stairs at his usual jog.
