APPEARANCE:
Shine has a fair complexion and chocolate brown eyes. Her hair is a deep brown and always done up and held in place by a pink comb, one of the only things they have left from their old life. On the battlefield, she wears a long beautiful pink kimono with plated armor, that is black and purple, over each shoulder and each of the sleeves is decorated with pink flower patterns. The silk she wears over her chest and waist is green and is also embroidered with flowers. Shine loves to wear bright colored and she never wears the same outfit twice in public. Though she and Shade don’t have much money, she is able to take old clothes that people threw away to make brand new outfits for herself and her brother. She hopes to one day leave her sword behind and become a tailor.
Shade has the same dark brown hair and light brown eyes as his sister but he has a paler complexion with dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep. The armor he wears mimics Shines’, but is located on his hips as black and red legs guards. He wears pure black guards on his shins and wrists as well. The pants he wears are a dark blue while his sleeveless, light blue kimono covers navy blue shatsu underneath. He wears a billowing scarf around his neck that is teal in color. He usually gets into disputes with Llyr over which is better but they can never come to a clear winner.
PERSONALITY:
Shine is one of the nicest girls you will ever meet. Be you fat, thin, tall, short, beautiful, or ugly, she will treat you with a kind smile and equally kind words. She is bubbly and bouncy and sometimes may seem to be a bit overbearing, but her heart is in the right place. The only way you could possibly make her lose her temper is if you do something to her hair. To her, her chocolate locks are the most important thing to her, save her brother Shade. If you do anything to her hair in any way, she will use her blade to cut you to ribbons.
Shade is the polar opposite of his sister in almost every way. While she is extremely outgoing, he prefers to stay by himself. Though it's not as if many people want to spend time with him. He is constantly sarcastic, rude and would rather slit his own throat with his sword rather than pay someone a compliment or thank them. But deep beneath his rough exterior lays... a pretty rough interior. He only has a soft spot for his sister and a select few people, only helping strangers to his convenience or if his sister takes the lead.
BIOGRAPHY:
Phonic is a village made up of mostly swordsmen and swordswomen who thought it their duty to cleanse the world of the monsters and, in turn, get rid of the miasma. It was filled with warriors who used only the sound of their voices as means of conjuring magic. They also did not believe in trying to master multiple forms of magic but to stay astute to one type, as to have them master it totally. Only the leader of this village, Oinone Kuroiya knew more than one type of elemental magic and was respected immensely by his people for this. But as the years wore on, the people began to worry about what would become of the score Oinone kept that gave them their power. What would become of them when she died? The score also provided them protection from the miasma when Oinone sang it each night. The leader decided that she must chose who will become her successor and waited for it. Many brought forth their children, the ones showing the most strength, the most intelligence, the most speed, but Oinone turned all of these children away. “The heavens will sing to me once my successors arrive” she declared.
Days turned to weeks, Weeks turned to months, and still, whenever asked, Oinone would shake her head wearily still waiting. Then, on a cold winter’s day, a terrible storm blew through the village and everyone stayed in their homes to not get caught in the tempest. As Oinone sat in her home, one of the boards that had been covering her windows cracked, sending wind blasting into her house. But her eyes opened wide as she listened. The wind blowing through her house sounded like a chorus of voices! But these were not the voices of the heavens... They were shouts of pain, agony, and grief. The village was under attack! She lifted up the score and hid it in her bag, wondering if perhaps they wanted it. The demons attacking were extremely quick and seemed to have a dangerous unknown power. By simply grabbing onto one of the villagers skull's, they seemed to drain the power from them completely, leaving them completely defenseless. Oinone knew that the village had to be evacuated for there was no way they could defend themselves against such a power. Noticing a pregnant woman about to be assaulted by one of the men, she unsheathed her sword and cleaved his hand off before helping the woman out into the miasma. Luckily, she had sung the Phonic Hymn, or else the miasma would have taken them instantly.
They wandered through the dense purple fog until they reached what seemed to be a large sprawling city. Telling the gate's guards that they were refugees, they entered the city and moved into an apartment in the Percussion District. As Oinone set the woman down, she saw that she had been injured severely and seemed to be screaming in pain. But the woman then said the pain was not from the wounds, but from contractions. It seemed that the baby had decided that it was coming now. After hours of labor, not one, but two cries filled the air, a boy and a girl's. Oinone turned her attention back to the mother but the woman's wounds, combined with childbirth, had been too much for her to bear... It seemed that the future of these twins rested with her. As she examined the two, she noticed a distinct difference between the twins. The girl was smiling and grabbing at her nose with her tiny hands while the boy simply stared up at her with a serious expression. It made her laugh how two who were brother and sister could be so different. So, she named the children after the two ever different elements: Shine and Shade.
The children grew up seeing Oinone as an eccentric grandmother. She watched them as they played with one another, feeling almost as a parent herself, not having any children of her own. On their 6th birthdays was when she gave them the gifts of their specially crafted blades. Knowing they were too heavy to carry, Shine simply hugged Oinone and thanked her. But Shade, trying to prove himself, lifted the blade and swung it with all his might. The blade light with a black glow, which frightened the child, causing him to release his grip on them. The sword sent a blast of dark energy through the window and out into the city where it dissipated almost instantly. Oinone scolded the child but her face quickly softened, as she told them to start getting used to the blades for, save each other, they would be the twins constant companions from now on.
As each of them grew, she allowed them to train alone to develop their own sword style and, when they reached the age of ten, decided it was time to begin teaching them the Phonic's Hymn, the source of power for all of Phonic. But they would not only learn one part, they would need to learn all seven parts perfectly. So each week, she took one aside as the other trained their sword fighting techniques. But there was something peculiar about them. No matter how loudly or softly they sang, no matter what octave, neither child seemed to be able to use magic. Oinone became greatly discouraged, as did the children, not knowing what they were doing wrong. They knew the Hymn's lyrics perfectly but just couldn't tap into it's power. In a last ditch attempt, Oinone decided to have them sing the hymn together. Suddenly, the power of the song flourished, with light and darkness flowing around them in harmonious dance and she finally understood what had been the matter. They each held half of the other's magical ability. Only combined could they use the great power that had been bestowed upon them.
When Shade and Shine became fourteen, they joined the local school of Symphony, Sanctuary Academy. Entering for their first year, the teachers were astounded that children of such a young age could already use such powerful magic. Unfortunately, their accuracy and control was severely lacking. So over the next six years, their magic grew in strength as they continued to hone their skills. Their magical power was no longer constricted to light and dark, but now able to be used for each element. They discovered that if they sing a different part of the hymn in unison, they could create different types of magic. Then came the day that the monsters attacked Symphony... They were beck with Oinone, caring for her in her elderly age when a monster burst through the wall, taking them all by surprise. Shade quickly drew his weapon as Shine helped the old woman into the back room, returning to help her brother. Shade quickly slashed the creature and ran outside, Shine hot on his heels.
What they saw before them seemed horrifyingly new yet terribly familiar. Monsters were storming the Percussion District. But Shine and Shade were ready. As Shine sang the Blaze Finale Hymn, Shade countered it with a Jolt Finale Hymn. As the two spells fused together, bolts of lightning and fireballs collided with the monsters that lay in the middle of the herd. The ones that were outside of the Percussion District scrambled back into the miasma in fear. The others that had been outside of the blasts range and withing the district began to attack innocent bystanders. Heading into the street, Shine and Shade drew their blades and quickly took down as many of the monsters as they could, each bursting into a light purple wisps. Huffing from using so much energy as they turned toward their home, Shade suddenly realized something. The monster he had slashed before... It had just collapsed to the side, not disappeared.... Then that meant... Shade began to run and Shine seemed to have realized the same thing for she was running at a faster pace than he was. She burst into the apartment to see blood spattered on the walls as the beast leapt at Shine. With a battle cry, she sliced it from head to tail and it burst into a wisp just like the other ones. They entered the room where they had left Oinone to see nothing there except the score that now lay broken on the floor of the room. Shine burst into tears of grief as Shade clenched his teeth and pounded his fist into the wall. If he had not been so careless...
Having no home to return to, they went to the closest thing to a home that they had left. Sanctuary Academy. News of how they had protected the Percussion District from the onslaught of beats had fallen onto the school's ears and they found themselves being offered a job as the school's new Finale Magic Instructors. They agreed almost instantly, Shine smiling once more. Though Oinone was gone, they could still teach her legacy of the score to the children of the school. Shade did not seem to share her joy for, though he was happy to teach the children off the school, he still felt that if he had just been stronger, Oinone would still be alive... They settled in their new teaching quarters, Shine slept while Shade sat bu the window, his blade in his hand. He did not sleep that night and it would be the first of many...
