The Ritz Ditz
Inside of the sudden light I awaken
In the middle of the night
No matter what the time
FULL NAME:
Marshell Simone Artyn
NICKNAME(S):
Shel is the most common nickname, but has earned “The Ritz Ditz” as some sort of insult.
AGE:
22
ALIGNMENT:
♪~Good~♪
CLASS:
Tempo Magic Instructor
SCHOOL RANK:
Tier 4 Conductor
DISTRICT:
String District, born and raised, now presently lives in Percussion.
APARTMENT NUMBER:
216
I`m just alone
APPEARANCE:
Marshell stands at about 5’7” (with her heels on) and a very slim build to her, which is maintained through dancing. She has deep in-set, maroon eyes and long, flowing, blonde hair that ends at her knees. The hair is ruffled and messed up due to constant movement in dancing and her scratching her head when thinking.
Her attire consists of those clothes she wore back in the String District, and the only reason she keeps them is because her Nurse made them for her. It is a scarlet dress with black laces underneath. The top of the dress has fur that wraps around her breasts and the whole dress is strapless. Her black heels accent her outfit well and she seems to somehow never break them, even while dancing. In the colder seasons she can be seen with a fur hat on, and handgloves, but she discards those for the warmer seasons.
PERSONALITY:
Shel is one of the kindest girls you’ll ever meet, always bubbly and always smiling without a care in the world. When she gets excited or ecstatic, she jumps up and down clapping her hands and depending on how loud or long the squeal is, the more enlightened she is. Sadly, she is a little… Slow... Shel is oblivious by nature and as a result does not realize some things as fast as others.
Even so, she knows of her own oblivious nature. When people respond awkwardly to her she simply asks them to let her collect her thoughts and give her some time to think. She looks at herself as herself and won’t change a thing or act a certain way. She knows who she is and that is a fact she prides herself on. She also gets a kick out of surprising people, which happens frequently during her classes. Most think she is incapable of teaching and knowing this she turns the tables and surprises her students with an infinite amount of knowledge on Tempo Magic.
Marshell also has an interesting side that only shows when she is engaged in combat. Matters of life and death are important to Marshell as her thought patterns keep her from acting quickly or having any time for celebration. The smile fades, and the entity of seriousness emerges from nowhere, where Shel then casts her personality aside for focus, so that her slow thoughts may collect faster and she can afford the ability to actually defend herself. Sometimes this fails, which is why she likes to have others around her to back her up in a fight.
BIOGRAPHY:
When Marshell was born into this world, she was born silent. Not permanently, but when she emerged from the womb, she was silent and seemed to be asleep. Her mother panicked thinking her baby’s life was over before it had even started, but the doctor was intrigued and said he wanted to do observations throughout her first year. He came to find that no matter the stimulus, she would always respond positively as a baby. This only happened when she was little and knew ONLY how to respond positively and for her first year of birth she was always found with a smile. Her parents didn’t care so much, they just wanted her to be perfect, and would spend as much money as it took for her to be; even so to the point she was left with the family Nurse and hardly ever saw her parents.
Several years later, once Shel had started school, her instructor had confronted the parents with an interesting discovery. Shel, at the age of six was reading at what the children at the age of twelve were. However, when asked on the spot during class, Shel took nearly five or ten minutes to compute what was asked of her. The parents, in their obsession with their perfect daughter, whom they never saw, took her immediately to a doctor to find out what was wrong.
The doctor took a few tests on Marshell and came out with an even more interesting discovery than her instructor had. Repeating the tests he had taken in the parents’ absence he stood and instructed Marshell to say what the picture slides he flashed in front of her were: an elephant, the letter B and the color green. She responded by staring blankly at the screen as they went by. He motioned to the parents and explained to them that she takes longer than an average six year old does to respond. The doctor then showed Marshell a word on the slide and gave her the instructions to give a word that meant the same. The word was “pretty”. There was silence coming from the girl, and the mother wept at her daughter’s apparent idiocy. Marshell suddenly broke the silence and sobbing with the words “Attractive, Beautiful, Charming, Graceful, Pleasant…” and continued on for a minute or so giving many synonyms. The doctor had never seen anything like this before and thus determined that Marshell’s train of thought was only slow, which was the reason she seemed blank at first, but given the time to think, she showed her true genius.
Later on, during one normal day at a friend’s house, she found her life’s love: Dancing. When her friend turned on the music she couldn’t help herself. If there was a beat to tap her foot to or a rhythm to carry her away, she was done for, and lost to the movement. This magic that she had found in her mobility was the best feeling she had ever felt in her life. Her brain doesn’t work fast, but her body does, and it’s her only claim to normality for her. She wanted for it to last forever, and thought many times on how she could obtain that dream, coming to the conclusion: “If I want to dance forever, I need to dance with time. I shall practice and perfect Tempo Magic, and cast my fears away. I WILL dance forever.” She was eleven when she made this conclusion.
Shel confronted the Artyns about her want to transfer to the Sanctuary in order to learn Tempo. “MAGIC?!” replied her father. “What has gotten into you, child??” the mother rebutted. They argued for hours on end with the result of Shel running to her room crying and never speaking of Tempo Magic to her parents again. In their rage, the parents blamed the Nurse and expelled her from the house saying her legends and lullabies had corrupted their daughter. Shel never spoke of Tempo Magic around home but did around school and friends. Oh how she dreamt of using magic to keep her fantasy going eternally. It was quiet around the house for a while, when at the age of eighteen, soon after her graduation, she finally grew the courage to confront her parents again.
The father gave her his stern signature face, and the mother became red. She asked why they were against magic and they argued that the forefathers for the city used magic and failed miserably, then remarked that an Artyn does not fail at all. “They are successful individuals and do not petty themselves with magic or dancing,” the father said, using dancing as if it were a sin. Marshell’s one true happiness was shot down by her parents, so she quickly gathered her things and ran away. She knew not where she was going, but knew this: she was now bound and determined to learn Tempo magic and fulfill her life’s goal.
Marshell soon reconnected with her Nurse, thanking her for what she had taught her. The Nurse broke down crying and offered all she could for the young Artyn girl’s forgiveness. Marshell smiled, and said there was no need for forgiveness, as nothing was harmed or needed an apology. She expressed endearingly that the Nurse had shown her indirectly that she must be herself and only herself, not what her parents wanted of her. She then explained that she was out to fulfill her desires and said she may not ever see the Nurse again, asking for a memoir of her. The Nurse presented a pair of Castanets, saying that if she is going to use Tempo Magic, she needs an instrument, and castanets were perfect. They could set any pace and help her channel the magic easily. Thanking the Nurse, Marshell then set out for the Sanctuary.
Her first year, she moved in to the school and soon picked up Tempo Magic. For some reason, it stuck to her faster than the other students, who knew who she was, as the “Ritz Ditz”. Despite her slow thinking, she quickly mastered the art of Tempo Magic in three years, where she was confronted by the staff of the Sanctuary and offered the title of “Tier Four Conductor.” She was proud to receive this title at the age of 21. A year later, this year, monster outbreaks were becoming rampant and as her position, she had to protect her future. Not just her future, but everyone’s. Marshell says that she will protect the city with her life if it has any light in the completion of dreams of others, like it has for her. She is also protective of the Sanctuary since it helped her fulfill her dreams as well. Nowadays, she can be seen mainly around the Sanctuary, or more frequently in the Percussion district, dancing the night away at the Movement. Sometimes she goes to the Soprano District to get a spa treatment, or even in Bass for a drink; however she absolutely refuses to go back to the String district for any reason whatsoever.
