What's what?
This role play, if you haven't guessed by now, uses a rather large number of musical terms. If you're ever at a loss for what a specific word means in this role play be sure to come back to this list for reference.
- Beat -This term is used to refer to students at the Sanctuary. Beats are common and don't often fit the description of the average student due to their varying ages and experience levels.
- Castrato -This is a slur used against men. It is a terrifying and emasculating concept. If you want more information... don't.
- Composer -This term describes the teachers or staff of the Sanctuary. They are mostly the minorly gifted inhabitants of Symphony who can command some very limited musical magic. Stronger or more experienced warriors who were summoned often rise to the position of composer as well.
- Dimensional Requiem -The Dimensional Requiem was the spell that the four Elegies cast as a stalling effort in the hope that they could summon warriors to protect their city. The Requiem brought warriors of legend back from the dead and dragged them into their world. It was a dangerous spell and is looked on with scorn because it tampered with the natural cycle of life.
- Drone -This is an insult meant to tell someone that they are flat in personality. It is an insult to the musical quality of their voice as well, which is considered rude within Symphony.
- Elegy -There are four Elegies in the Symphony. An Elegy is the new name for the four mages of lore. After their trans-dimensional revival they are known as Elegies, which is considered a rude term and is often offensive. If someone is really offended at another it is not uncommon for them to use the word Elegy as the worst form of insult.
- Etude -This is a training skill used to teach young children or aspiring magic musicians how to harness the strength of a melody. Etudes are extremely difficult to master and there are many different levels so that the students might learn even the slightest hint of musical magic. More often than not though there isn't any progress. Music magic is a gift few can use well.
- Lyrics -Lyrics are an out of character term we use for your character applications or bios. You'll notice in the character creation area that the outlines are called 'lyrics'. Just us being geeks >>
- Muse -Muses are the other specialized kind of composer at the sanctuary. These composers are the ones who can teach their students music magic through etudes(see later term). There are very few muses due to the difficulty level in mastering etudes.
- Tonal -This is the specialized term used to describe composers to teach only in the field of the world around them. These composers can't teach their students how to use magic of any kind.
- Tone -Tone is the all inclusive term that you'd use to describe a city-dweller who doesn't attend the Sanctuary. Tones are separated up into where they reside within the city of Symphony, so to be more specific someone in the String District would be a tone, but they would be more often just called a String. I decided to make a quick exchange between a String visiting the Soprano district for an example! (can you be this geeky? Why yes. Yes I can.)
String: "I didn't expect Sopranos to be so horrific."
Soprano: "Aw, c'mon man. We're all just tones." - Tonic -Tonics are special tones from Soprano who hold command over herbal remedies that can cure many illnesses. Tonics are great alternatives to hospital care.
